Comprehensive Hearing Evaluation

• What to expect?

• During this evaluation, we will learn about your listening ability by completing an extensive case history. Be sure to tell us how you hear in different environments and how this makes you feel. Next, we will complete a series of tests that make up a complete diagnostic hearing evaluation:

• Otoscopy: 

  • Visualization of outer ear canal and ear drum with small light. 

• Middle Ear Measures: 

  • This series of tests involves soft cushions in the ear, small pressure changes and some louder, but not harmful, tones. The patient is able to relax with no need to respond. This test helps to tell us if the middle or outer ear is contibuting to any hearing loss. 

• Distortion-Product Otoacoustic Emissions:

  • This test objectively tells us how sound is traveling to a specific part of the hearing organ. A small, soft cushion is placed in the ear. The patient will hear sounds while the patient sits quietly and calmly.

• Audiologic Evaluation:

  • Performed in the sound-treated booth, soft cushions will be placed in your ear. You will either raise your hand or press a button when you hear the "beep." You will also repeat a series of words.
